* Be able to describe signs and symptoms of various less lethal injuries including tear gas, Mace, bean bag shotgun injuries, and the Taser.

Topic Highlights
Violent crime has long been a part of EMS responses within the districts we serve. This presentation can cover two separate parts of police and EMS interaction, depending on the needs of your conference.

First, scene safety as a priority to EMS responders. This portion will cover both crime scenes but also other high risk arenas such as highways and correctional institutions.

Second, police operations are increasingly using less lethal mechanisms to subdue subjects. These include the use of Mace, bean bag shotguns, and the Taser. These topics will be covered as a discussion of what the weapon does to subdue patients and how EMS responders may be called to treat these injuries.

This presentation will let the EMS responder have a better idea of some of the threats facing them on the street and a better level of expectation on how to treat less lethal injuries. A second lecture, Crash, Boom, Bang, Pow, covers Tactical EMS from an introductory perspective, if your conference is looking for another aspect of police and EMS interaction and additionally, this conference session can look at the issue of positional asphyxia and excited delerium to a greater etxtent than generic scene safety issues.

Audience/Track
