Topic Highlights
The Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate program provides entry level training for advanced life support providers. The program follows the 1995 and/or 1999 versions of the US Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum. This certificate program combines didactic sessions and skill labs with an extensive clinical and field experience. Upon completion of the program each student participates in a supervised field internship to allow the essential competencies of advanced prehospital care to be mastered.
Students successfully completing this program of instruction will be eligible for certification testing by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
The EMT Intermediate program provides general instruction in all human body systems and advanced life support management for a wide range of conditions. Components of this course are listed below:
Unit 1 Preparatory
Foundations of the EMT-I, Well-Being of the EMT-I, Medical-Legal and Ethical issues, an Overview of Human Systems, Emergency Pharmacology, Venous Access and Medication Administration.
Unit 2 Airway
ALS Airway management, oxygen therapy, airway adjuncts, and suctioning.
Unit 3 Patient Assessment
Patient Assessment, History Taking, Techniques of the Physical Exam, Clinical Decision Making, Communications and Documentation.
Unit 4 Medical
Respiratory, Cardiac, Altered Mental Status, Neurological, Abdominal, Environmental, Poisoning and Overdose, Behavioral, Allergic Reactions, GYN related emergencies, AHA ACLS 2005 Guidelines Certification.
Unit 5 Trauma Emergencies
Trauma Systems, Hemorrhage, Shock, Soft Tissue Injuries, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Burns and Chest Trauma, Trauma Skills.
Unit 6 Special Considerations
Obstetrics, Neonatal Resuscitation, Pediatrics and Geriatrics.
Unit 7 Assessment Based Management
Prerequisites for EMT Intermediate:
- The minimum age for course enrollment is 18 years of age at the start of the training program. As evidenced by a copy of the prospective students’ certified birth certificate or valid drivers license.
- Be proficient in reading, writing and speaking the English language.
- High school diploma, general equivalency diploma, or higher degree of education as evidenced by a copy of the certificate or official transcripts.
- Be of sound physical and mental condition, capable of performing all assigned duties. Have no physical defect, which would render the student unable to perform all practical skills required for this level of training.
- Hold current certification in an approved course in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (AHA Healthcare Provider CPR or ARC Professional Rescuer).
- Have never been convicted of a felony under the laws of this State or of the United States.
- Have never been founded on Child, Domestic or Elderly Abuse.
- Have never had an EMS License or Certificate revoked or suspended by any certifying agency.
Audience
This class is intended for the EMT - Basic who is looking to return to the classroom to refine and develop their assessment skills and therapy options.
