Glowing, Sniffles, and Ouchies: Nuclear-Radiological Events

Objectives
* Be able to describe sources of radiation in the environment and the four types of radiation that exist and explain appropriate shielding mechanisms for each.
* Be able to describe specific personal protective equipment for each type of material that is radioactive.
* Discuss the prevalence of radioactive material and a case study where a device was built in a private home.
* Be able to describe appropriate decontamination for the patient who has received various radiation dosages.

Topic Highlights
Since 9/11 questions about the possibility of a "dirty bomb" strike have swirled about the public’s consciousness.  Movies like the Peacemaker and the Sum of All Fears have provided us with a Hollywood glimpse into what might happen.

While the strike has thankfully not happened, the threat looms large. This basic class will cover the foundation of terrorism response to a dirty bomb attack. Topics will include the physics of blast waves and a basic physiologic overview of radiation sickness. Additionally, specific decontamination methods will be introduced that are peculiar to radiologic contamination.

Audience/Track
This class is operational in nature and open to any EMS provider or educator.
