Little Kids with Big Problems

Objectives
* List basic pediatric assessment modalities.
* List four broad categories of pediatric congenital heart defects.
* Discuss presentation and initial treatment options for pediatric heart conditions such as Tetralogy of Fallot and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.
* Describe various pediatric conditions such as chromosomal disorders, hydrocephaly, and cerebral palsey.
* Be able to describe basic technical equipment issues associated with pediatric trach tubes, mechanical ventilators, and shunts.

Topic Highlights
While many of our EMS providers feign sickness and complain of being "allergic to children," those little ones with congenital heart defects or with special health care needs will strike real fear in even the most battle-tested EMS provider. This lecture will take common expectations of the pediatric patient and force the student to re-evaluate their assumptions.

Nonetheless, this presentation is designed to explain pediatric high tech kids and heart conditions in a down to earth way.  Along with associated signs and symptoms, some basic treatment modalities will be discussed to both familiarize the provider with the conditions and make them more comfortable with their treatment.

Conditions covered will include trisomy chromosonal disorders, an overview of pediatric heart defects, neurologic issues, and equipment issues including trach tubes, feeding tubes, and shunts.

Audience/Track
This class is for the ALS provider and the EMS educator.
