To Fly or Not to Fly: Safe Medevacs

Objectives
* Discuss the increase in programs and helicopters providing aeromedical service.

* Discuss the "overuse" of helicopters in some media stories and the resulting lawsuits occurring from patients being billed for medically unnecessary transport.
* Identify the Golden hour and Platinum Ten minutes and controversies associated with both of these terms.
* List components of the Glasgow Coma Scale and Revised Trauma Score.
* List components of a Landing Zone using the criteria set by the National Association of EMS Pilots.

Topic Highlights
Aeromedical transports by helicopter are on the increase as private for profit companies initiate new helicopter bases across the country side. While some speakers discuss the safety records of helicopter transport, there is clearly a role for launching multimillion dollar aircraft to assist in the care and transport of your patients.

This session will cover components of launching a mission and issues associated with setting up the landing zone to provide for a safe transport for the patient, flight crew, and ground providers. For fire based providers, an additional module on aircraft safety and rescue is available also.

Audience/Track
This class is for any provider level and is operational in nature.
