Young Guns: School Shootings and Youth Violence

Objectives
* Be able to discuss the history of youth violence and recent school shootings in America.
* Be able to anticipate traumatic injuries and list treatment priorities.
* Review pediatric START triage and mass casualty issues.
* Discuss interaction with Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team and police on "active shooter" incidents.

Topic Highlights
April 20, 1999 was a terrible day for the community of Littleton, Colorado as two youth killers killed fellow students and terrorized a neighborhood and a nation. Years later, the Washington area snipers caused similar fears for schools around Washington, D.C. Again and again we see youngsters with assault rifles and handguns terrorize our children.

As many experts predict it isn't "if" but "when" another school shooting occurs, it is important for EMS providers to recognize the complex nature of both school shootings and the increasingly dangerous violent behavior our youthful predators are perpatrating in our communities. Topics covered will include both a history of events but a direct correlation of EMS roles and responsibilities to better prepare for these unthinkable events including pediatric mass casualty management and pediatric shock management.

Audience/Track
This class will cover both ALS and BLS treatment topics and the operational components of pediatric mass casualty events.
